Is Your Phoenix Rising?
There is no better symbol and metaphor for why organizations need to change than the phoenix...
In the garden of the Paradise under the tree of knowledge, bloomed a rose bush. Here, in the first rose, a bird was born. His flight was like the flashing of light, his plumage was beauteous, and his song ravishing. But when Eve plucked the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, when she and Adam were driven from Paradise, there fell from the flaming sword of the cherub a spark into the nest of the bird, which blazed up forthwith. The bird perished in the flames; but from the red egg in the nest there fluttered aloft a new one – the one solitary Phoenix bird. The fable tells that he dwells in Arabia and that every hundred years, he burns himself to death in his nest, but each time a new Phoenix… rises up from the ashes.
From Hans Christian Andersen’s The Phoenix Bird (1850)
Whether business professionals or older consumers, many adults enter their “retirement” years like a phoenix into the flames. Mindlessly accepting that aging means decline and dependence they become victims of self-fulfilling prophecies. Rather than a sentence of death on the installment plan, the New Consumer Majority (adults age 40 and better) is beginning to shake things up by redefining life’s second half. They understand there is a phoenix living in each of us just waiting to rise up and experience all life can be!
Likewise, businesses that are still following the advertising and marketing paradigm plucked from yesterday’s Youth Market are feeling the heat of lagging sales, disgruntled customers and declining market share. Those interested in learning the new rules of ageless marketing and applying new tools such as an inclusionary vocabulary, conditional positioning, values-based advertising and empathic selling will rise up to dominate their competitors in the next decade.
